Google Books is a specialist search product developed by the search engine company Google that is designed to help users find books and other forms of literature online. If you, for example, search for a particular book here and it is in their database then you will be taken to a specific page that contains:
- All relevant details of the book (i.e. publisher, ISBN, content, number of pages)
- An overview of the book
- Reviews/links to reviews
- User ratings
- Places to buy the book and prices if they are available
- Related and linked books that may be of interest
- Preview pages (if the publisher has agreed for these to be shown by the site)
- Maps of places mentioned in the book if relevant
The books indexed in Google Books will historically have been put there either via a publisher/author partner program or via Google’s partnership with libraries. There are currently around 7 million books listed in the database. A new agreement with the publishing industry in the USA should shortly see the system able to offer more options including access to out of print books and online access to entire books. These changes may not work on a worldwide basis to begin with however.
