Google Desktop is a free software download that is produced by the search engine company Google. This product allows you to download a search mechanism that looks very much like the standard Google search engine. The difference here is that Google desktop allows you to search for stuff that you have stored on your computer rather than just on the web.
You can use Google Desktop to search for:
- Files and documents (including PDFs, ZIPs and Microsoft Office files)
- Emails
- Photos
- Chat records
- Web pages that you have viewed in the past
- Music downloads
The system also comes with additional indexers that allow you to add other files to the system so that they can be accessed as well.
In addition to the basic computer search that Google Desktop offers you can also find a range of other features and ‘gadgets’ that may be useful to you. You can also find information on the Internet and you can use Google Gadgets to do a variety of things. This feature can, for example, tell you when you have incoming mail, check the weather, view news stories, make and save notes, view a calendar and see the time.
