Google Earth is a specialist web based program that allows people to access an online virtual globe full of geographic, mapping and other related data. A search of a place name, address or location in this system can take you to an instant image of it based on satellite, GIS and aerial photographic data. The system currently allows you to do anything from exploring galaxies, to visiting the ocean floor and the street in which you live by ‘flying’ from search to search.
Google Earth is available free to general consumers for home use and can be set up to run simply from most home computers with an Internet connection. Businesses that want to use the system for their own use may be advised to buy a license for Google Earth Pro. This version of the system also offers a range of additional services and tools that may be useful to many businesses that might use this kind of mapping system.
The system was originally developed by a digital mapping company called Keyhole Corp. This company and its product were bought out by Google in 2004 and it has been further developed over the years by Google since its company release under the new brand in 2005.
