Google Groups is a free service offered by Google that allows people to set up online communities where they can communicate with others via the Groups web interface or via email. Groups on Google are usually set up by people looking to share interests and to get together with friends and contacts by using web technology.
You can either use the service to set up your own group or you can join an existing group. In some cases you will need to formally join a group before you can access it fully and you may need permission to do so from the person leading the group in question. Other groups may have open membership.
Google Groups offers a range of features and benefits including:
- The ability to join in discussions over the Internet or to use your email account.
- Options to create web pages within your group’s interface.
- The use of in-built design features to create a group image.
- A system that allows you to upload files and documents for sharing with your group.
Google Groups is also often used as a search mechanism for archived Usenet newsgroup postings. Google has set up a listing of Usenet data from 1981 and offers access to current Usenet groups as well.
