Google Street View

Google Street View is part of the Google Maps and Google Earth systems. With Street View you can take a virtual tour of various UK and international cities using 360 degree technology. This is kind of like controlling a video camera showing you exactly what an area looks like. The photographs that make up the image files here are taken at street level so you really can experience an area here almost at first hand.

Once you find a street view that you want to look at you can manipulate the initial image to pan around it and to zoom in and out. Each view has a small box in the bottom corner that contains the ‘peg man’ -- this is a small figure that you can use to navigate round images. If you move him around then the image you are looking at will change to match his movements.

The photos used here were taken by a special fleet of cars. In some hard to access areas trikes were used to get some images. In both cases the photos were taken with special directional cameras to get the finished product of a panoramic set of images. The system was initially launched in the United States and now offers options via Google Maps and Google Earth for a variety of countries. The system tends to concentrate on cities and major towns.
