In HR terms conflict management is the term used to describe the measures that might be taken to manage and resolve certain issues or problems. These may be conflicts between employees or conflicts between an employee and their manager or employer. Conflict management can be handled internally or, in certain cases, it may be better handled by an independent third party.
Many general HR training courses and qualifications will cover conflict management as part of their syllabus nowadays. It is generally considered to be better all round if a company can deal with conflict internally and come to a resolution that is acceptable for all sides rather than for the situation to escalate out of control. Managing the process this way will usually involve specific conflict management and conflict resolution techniques.
For example, if an HR department does not make moves to solve a problem between two employees then one or more of these employees may leave the company and the general atmosphere around them may not be conducive to a good working environment. The cost of recruiting a replacement or sorting out wider issues as the conflict affects other people could be far higher than taking the time to sort out the problem in the first place.
