Dismissal Procedures

Dismissal procedures are specific steps which a company must take if it wants to dismiss an employee. In some cases a company may have a number of steps that must be followed before they can actually dismiss an individual. In others there may be a case for instant dismissal. The structure of the procedures here will depend on the company’s rules and regulations and on the reason why an employee needs to be dismissed in the first place.
So, for example, a company may state in its contracts that infringements will generally be dealt with via a series of verbal and written warnings. Once the employee reaches a certain stage in the warnings process then they may face dismissal if they carry on breaking company rules. In some cases, however, companies may have on the spot dismissal proceedings set into their contracts if an employee acts or behaves in a specific way.
Dismissal procedures are often, at least in part, formally handled by a company’s HR department if they have one. A representative of HR will be responsible for working with managers during this process. In some cases the sole dismissal responsibility may lie with HR and in others the dismissal meeting will be attended by both line management and by an HR representative.
