Human Resources (HR) Planning

Human Resources planning is a vital part of the HR function for most businesses. The planning that takes place here will, on a basic level, work to make sure that a company employs the right number of staff at any given time. It will hopefully avoid over-employing (and wasting money) and under-employing (and missing out on business opportunities).
As part of its Human Resources plan a company will try to make sure that:
- It has enough staff in place in all roles across the business to meet current business needs.
- It takes into consideration potential future business opportunities (like a potential large order, for example) and plans to make sure that there are enough personnel to fulfil all necessary roles if it comes off.
- It can spot trouble areas early and work to avoid them becoming an issue or to implement specific measures such as redundancies/early retirement schemes to alleviate the pressure if they do come to bear.
- It has specific training and promotional programs in place to both increase the capabilities of existing staff and to motivate them to stay with the company for the future.
- The company best uses its space/employee ratio.
This kind of planning can simply help a business retain staff, deal with issues that may affect staffing levels and ensure that cost effective practices are maintained at all times.
