Strategies For Recruitment and Selection

View future Recruitment and Selection Training Courses

The recruitment and selection process can take various forms. In HR terms recruitment may be done in-house, for example, or a business may opt to use external recruitment agencies to do the job for them. In some cases a business may use a mix of internal and external recruitment on a regular basis depending on the hires they need to make.

The most popular strategies that are used during the recruitment and selection process include:

  • Candidate database building -- here the company will maintain a database of candidates who have applied to them for roles in the past either on spec or in response to a specific recruitment drive. If a new role comes up they can contact suitable candidates to see if they are interested.
  • Agency selection -- here the company will use the services of one or more recruitment agencies to help them find suitable candidates. This may be done on an ongoing basis or to meet a specific recruitment need.
  • Advertising and selection -- here the company or their chosen recruitment agencies will run an advert to help bring in candidates for a specific role or roles. The adverts can appear in traditional media (i.e. newspapers) or in digital media (i.e. on the company’s website or on job websites).
  • Search and selection -- here the company will usually retain a search specialist to help them find people to fill a role by actively searching out qualified candidates and approaching them.

The actual strategies that are used during the recruitment and selection process may well vary according to factors such as the number of roles that need to be filled, the seniority of the post(s) and the business sector itself.
