Sickness Absence Management

Sickness Absence Management (often referred to in the HR industry is SAM) is a specific kind of HR procedure that a business can use to help it manage its employee absences due to sickness. This kind of procedure is designed to help a business minimise the money that it loses to sickness days and to help it better manage the health if its workforce.
This kind of procedure can work in a variety of ways. It basically will help an HR department/management team to assess:
- Absence numbers in the company as a whole and any patterns that might be arising.
- Individuals who may be causing a problem by taking a lot of days off sick for various reasons.
- Employees who may be on the cusp of developing a long term health problem (i.e. those who may be taking a lot of days off for the same/related sickness reasons).
- How best to treat any employees who are off on long term sick leave and how to help them sort out their situation.
Many businesses will run their own SAM systems, either informally or via a formal software program. Some larger businesses may, in some cases, bring in some third party help to help them assess issues here and to give help in actioning them.
