In HR terms talent management is an HR methodology that is concerned with attracting and retaining the best available employees for a business. A well structured HR department is not merely concerned with bringing in new people -- it should also take steps to make sure that it recruits the best employees that it can and that it maximises the chances of these employees making a contribution well into the future via various staff retention measures.
So, for example, an HR department that is conscious of the advantages of talent management will:
- Seek to attract the best talent for any given role.
- Make sure that new employees feel welcomed into the company and that they are integrated quickly so that they can hit the ground running in productivity terms.
- Take time to ensure that existing personnel are treated with as much care and attention as new recruits.
- Ensure that all employees remain as happy and productive as possible during their employ and that they are given relevant training, assessment and promotions/salary raises as applicable.
In some ways recruiting new staff can be easier than retaining existing employees but this is a costly route to take and it can make it harder to train staff up so that they can work to optimum effect. A well thought out talent management environment, however, will aim to get the best out of employees for the business.
