Asset Management

As its name suggests asset management is the process of managing a set of assets. The assets in question here can take various forms such as investments and property, for example. There are various ways that this term is used in the business world. The best known example is probably the one that is used in financial investments.
Here, an asset manager or asset management company will manage the assets of either individuals and/or corporate investors. The aim here is to maximise the returns on investment to make the assets earn as much as possible for their investors. This will usually be done by a specialist third party such as an investment bank or asset management specialist although some larger companies may also employ their own in-house personnel for this role.
In the general business world asset management may well be also used to describe processes that do not always involve financial investment. Every business has assets of some kind and, in larger organisations or those with a specific focus, internal employees may take responsibility for managing those assets. Here, the emphasis is on issues such as both short term and long term management of these assets, resource allocation, planning and control.
