Interim Management

Interim management is the term used to describe a situation where an individual is brought into a company to fill a particular role as a temporary solution. This kind of solution can be used in various circumstances. The manager recruited here will generally only come into a business on a short-term basis.
So, for example, this kind of solution can be used when a senior role needs to be filled but there are no candidates suitable to do the job in-house and the external recruitment process may leave a gap for too long. If, for example, the CEO of a business has to retire suddenly through ill health, the business has nobody internally that is suitable to replace him and it cannot afford to leave the position unfilled until it has found a suitable replacement then the decision may be made to bring in an interim manager.
Interim management solutions can also be used in other situations where it is necessary to bring in external expertise for a specific period of time. If a business is setting up a new software system, for example, and it does not have the relevant technology and project management skills then it might opt to bring in someone who can manage the process for them until it is done.
