Supply chain management is a type of business management system which takes specific responsibility for a company’s product or service supply chain from start to finish. Here, for example, the company might be responsible for managing its own supply chain from the initial buying in of materials to make their products through to the customer buying process.
For many businesses this may well be a question of being involved in managing the actions of various businesses that have some involvement throughout the supply chain. The core business here almost works like a project manager in this instance, making sure that the supply chain is able to and does keep moving smoothly and effectively.
Some businesses will also use specially designed supply chain management software packages to guide them through this process. Others will use their own programs or internal systems to manage the supply chain. The process in itself -- if it is to work -- won’t just involve interaction and management of external suppliers, manufacturers and other third parties. There are many different departments and functions within a company itself that will play a part in this process and it is important that they are all tied into a central system to make supply chain management work as it should.
