Workforce Management

There are two main definitions of workforce management in business terms. The first involves the way that a company works to retain its staff by keeping them motivated, occupied and contented. The second applies to specific techniques that are used to manage a number of employees and their time/resources.
In the first instance a company that uses specific workforce management tools as a business solution will have implemented a range of measures to help keep their workforce happy. This is often about making sure that there are HR, people management and benefits systems in place that make employees feel valued. It may also include other issues such as training and performance management.
In the second instance workforce management may be used across an organisation or across a division, team or project to manage the time and resources of the staff in question. This is also connected to the previous definition of workforce management in that it is designed to keep people working productively and happily to the best of their abilities but without under-utilising them or over working them. This form of workplace management is also an effective way of optimising a workforce and can help a business make sure that it employs the optimum number of personnel for tasks in hand.
