A marketing consultancy is a business that is set up to give marketing advice to other businesses. This kind of consultancy can be run by an individual or it can take the form of a larger company that employs a variety of specialists. The consultancy may offer advice and planning with the tactical marketing elements taken on in house or they may take on entire projects.
Some marketing consultancies will work within a specific business sector whilst others will offer their services across any sector. So, for example, you might hire a manufacturing marketing firm to help your business if you operate in that sector or a generalist firm if you prefer. Some businesses keep a marketing consultancy on retainer as they use them so regularly. Others will prefer to use a consultancy on an ad hoc basis as and when they need them.
The actual services on offer from marketing consultancy to consultancy will vary. Some will specialise in a specific marketing area or field and others may offer help across the whole marketing mix. So, for example, a generalist firm could help you with advertising, PR, online marketing and field marketing. A marketing consultancy that only works in the events marketing field, however, would solely specialise in that sector.
