There are many different components of the marketing mix and advertising is probably one of the biggest and best known. Advertising can take various forms -- traditionally businesses tended to use print advertising for their marketing needs but nowadays they can also use online advertising as well as/instead of traditional methods.
Common types of advertising commonly used today include:
- Print advertising (i.e. in newspapers, magazines, journals)
- Direct marketing advertising (i.e. in direct mail campaigns, leaflets and brochures)
- Billboard advertising
- Broadcast media advertising (i.e. TV and radio)
- Online advertising (i.e. online advertising campaigns, web broadcasts)
Most businesses will outsource at least part of their marketing and advertising needs to specialist agencies. In some cases a business may outsource the whole process to a marketing firm such as an advertising agency and the agency will do everything from buying the space through to ad design and implementation.
In other cases businesses may only outsource part of the work here. So, for example, they may use an advertising agency to buy space for them and to work with them on their ad design. In some cases, as with larger businesses, they may also have their own advertising department that can do all of this work in house.
