Online marketing, often referred to as e-marketing or web and Internet marketing, is the practice of using digital tools to promote, market and sell products and services to customers. The most common tools used here are the Internet, email -- customer management in an online world can also be handled by the use of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and data management tools.

Online marketing tends to start with the design and development of a website. This is the core part of most marketing initiatives here -- the site can work as a promoter of products/services to customers and as a place where they can learn more and make purchases/perform specific actions.

For this to work, however, a site must undergo some online marketing work to make it ‘visible’ to visitors. The most common way of doing this is to use SEO (search Engine Optimization techniques that allow search engines to find and ‘rank’ the site in search results. Other ways of using this kind of marketing to draw in visitors include online advertising (such as PPC and banner ads), email and viral marketing and social media marketing.

The speed to market in Internet terms is often a lot faster and more immediate than that given by traditional marketing techniques. Online marketing can therefore help any business market and sell its products/services quickly and globally at relatively low costs.
