Viral marketing is a relatively new form of marketing. This kind of technique works by getting a ‘message’ communicated to an audience by its own members. Here, one person sees a viral marketing message and then will pass it on to others who will, in their turn, pass it on and so on and so on. The name viral marketing comes from the fact that this kind of word of mouth spread works like the spread of virus, from individual to individual.
Most viral marketing campaigns will use the Internet or another online tool such as email as their launch pad. So, for example, a business may run an amusing ad campaign on a website which this then picked up by visitors to the site who then pass on links to others. Or a company may offer a special deal to a customer who spreads the word to friends and family who then go on to deal with the company.
This kind of marketing is extremely popular with businesses as it has the ability to spread across a consumer sector virtually immediately and it costs relatively little money compared to traditional marketing methods. All the work here is basically done by the viewers of the campaign who then spread its message for the business without even realising that they are doing so.
