Website marketing is the term used to describe those methods used to promote a website online. The aim of this form of marketing is to maximise the chances of someone finding and visiting the site in question.
In many cases website marketing will take place online. Techniques here include:
- Search Engine Optimization -- this marketing technique will give the website the best chance of being picked up and ranked by search engines. This is usually achieved by various means including keyword placement. If a site is optimized well then it stands a better chance of appearing high in the search engine rankings. This means that it then has a better chance of increasing traffic (i.e. visitors) to it.
- Online advertising -- online advertising is used to promote a website and to encourage visitors to go to it. The most common types of ads used here are ‘click-throughs’ which lead a visitor directly to a site when they click on the advert. Link and email marketing can also serve the same purpose.
- Social marketing -- nowadays a lot of web marketers will use social networking sites as a way of attracting visitors to their sites.
Website marketing can also take place in offline environments as well. You can, for example, use your site address in press and trade advertising. In this instance a potential visitor may see details of a site offline but may make the effort to go online to view it.
